A stakeholders’ forum aimed at strengthening flood preparedness in vulnerable communities has been held in the district, with a strong call for proactive measures ahead of a possible spillage of the Akosombo Dam.
The forum, organized by the Volta River Authority (VRA), brought together key actors including officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the District Assembly, traditional authorities, and community leaders.
Opening the event, the District Chief Executive underscored the urgent need for enhanced preparedness at the community level. He emphasized the importance of timely and coordinated sensitization, effective early warning systems, and strategic local planning to reduce the impact of potential flooding.
He also reiterated concerns about critical environmental interventions, highlighting the need for dredging the Keta Lagoon to increase its capacity to hold excess water during flood events. Additionally, he called for the immediate removal of sandbar blockages at the Fuveme estuary, noting that the obstruction continues to impede the free flow of water into the sea and exacerbates flooding in low-lying communities.
Participants at the forum agreed that sustained collaboration among all stakeholders is essential to safeguard lives and property. The engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to build resilience and ensure the safety of residents in flood-prone areas across the district.
